Cololó is the heart of Uruguay’s most traditional agricultural region, located just a few miles east of the enchanting colonial city of Mercedes. The sparsely populated landscape is enhanced by the hilly "Pampa" with its herds of cattle and sheep. The sky blue "Rio Negro" winds its way through the green idyll and offers a wonderful habitat to hundreds of species of birds and parrots. "Gauchos", as the local cowboys are called, are the sole residents in this region. There is a special charm to the never-ending natural landscape with its hints of Spanish and Portuguese colonial influence: it is as though time has stood still.
